4 awesome places in Poland that are worth visiting if you don’t have much time

Which 4 places in Poland are really worth going to? Or what if you don't have much time to spend in this cool country? Like us, we only 7 days and had to decide where not to go. There are so many cool places in Poland that this was hard to decide.

What to expect in this article

Warsaw

Warsaw stole my heart. For that reason, I also wrote a blog about this amazing city. You need at least 2 days to explore the old and new town, see the monuments and visit some of the palaces.

This center of the Old Town (or Stare Miasto) is actually on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. During World War 2 almost all the buildings were ruined, only 15% were still standing, which mean they had to rebuild everything. Right now it’s a mind-blowing center with the most colorful houses. I loved walking around here and taking many photos.

The new part of Warsaw is an area filled with skyscrapers and modern shopping malls. So you can wander around and be amazed by some of the architecture and shop ’till you drop!

Auschwitz - Birkenau

Auschwitz might not be ‘awesome’, but it for sure is an impressive place where you should have been once. It is only 1 hour away from Krakow (which I will discuss below) and there are many tours being organized from Krakow. We visited Auschwitz in our own car and booked a guided tour of 3 hours, which cost us 85 złoty pp (18 euros).

A tip: if you are a student, take your student card with you in Poland, you get so many discounts! Public transport and highly visited tourist spots are just examples.

I was a bit nervous to go here, but it was definitely worth it. Since I have been here, The Second World War is not just a story for me anymore. But it is something I can imagine very vividly of how it must have been for the Jews and other groups that were murdered in this place. I think this is the most important realization and lesson for me and very valuable for the rest of my life.

I wrote a different blog about the full experience:

Zakopane / Kasprowy Wierch

The area around Zakopane is stunning as there are mountains everywhere! It’s called the highest city in Poland for a reason!
On our way from the Netherlands to Warsaw, the road was pretty flat, but at soon as we drove more south we saw the hills. Zakopane is near the border with Slovakia, so you can even cross the border.
Zakopane is a good base if you want to do some hiking, or take a thermal bath.

Morskie Oko! Wish I went here

You can go hike Morskie Oko and have beautiful views over the lake in a valley. I would have loved to do this.
You can also take a cable car and go to the mountain peak Kasprowy Wierch on 1987 meters high. My parents can’t walk well, which is the reason we choose a cable car. If you are more sporty, you can also choose to walk up or down.
The views from this peak were absolutely gorgeous. I did walk up the hill after the cable car, but as my family didn’t come with me and I was a tiny bit scared (falling rocks on a mountain peak, I am a hero on socks 😉 I didn’t go very far, unfortunately.

If I ever go to Poland again, I would love to visit this place again and hike Moskie Oko or go to Szaflary or Bukowina Tatrzańska to chill in a thermal bath.

Krakow

The last place we visited for 2 days was Krakow, 3.5 hours from Warsaw.
Before going to Poland, Krakow was one place I heard most about, so my expectations were a bit too high. Also, Warsaw had stolen my heart. Luckily it is definitely is a fun city to explore for 1 or 2 days.

The Wawel palace is like a fairytale and the center is very pretty. The market at Rynek Glowny is super touristic, but also cool. It’s very photogenic. Every corner I had to take a photo. You can also shop here very well.
I always love cities with a water body and Krakow is one of those.
You should not miss this place on your trip to Poland.

These 4 places are very nice if you only have 7 days in Poland. Next time I would love to visit other places like Gdánsk and Wrocław. I fell in love with Poland and can't wait to visit it again!
